Hey my dear YQP,

I am supposed to be studying but I just can't get down to the mood to even open up my school bag! ><

Yesterday, 21/4/2011 was the day we played to our hearts content. Everything went on soo well on stage, everything passed so fast I couldn't believe it was ending!

Still remember backstage, all of us were panicking, and listening to all the other schools playing zheng and practising along with them. HCI was before us and RGS was after us. Everyone was staring at how much instruments we have and that HC guy was laughing at us but I just ignored him cause I know they are nothing compared to us.

Very soon it was our turn to go up on stage. My hands were sweating and I was very scared I would forget what to do. I felt like I havent seen the rest of CO for soo long. 2 years back, the same time, I was backstage listening to every other schools comments on our senior's performance and this year, I know other schools are going to do the same to us.

During zheng, I was soo touched by the music that I started crying. That bar 56 was so together!!! I tried to hold back my tears cause I know I will look really unglam O: haha zheng was soo good, everything sounded flowly and pieced together and so far I have never heard a zheng that was better than ours. yaotian's starting was so cool! I bet the audience are totally shocked :D My hand was shivering like MAD during my muyu part that I couldnt it the right place and i missed out a total of 2 beats O: But at bar 59 I was praying everything will be fine and i am sooo proud of you sophia! I could feel the starting of xiao kuai ban was too loud haha!! At the ending, I could feel the music flowing into me and I was really sad that everything's gonna be over just like that! O:

For the past 6months, we all have been working really hard. I believe sometimes I will just lose faith in everyone one of you including myself and give up practicing. But whatever it is, the pushwe gave ourselves the last few weeks had paid off. During the announcing of the results, we had to painfully wait for 52 schools. and when it reached no. 53 nanyang girls' high school, I held my breath, hoping that those 3 words would be heard. GOLD... WITH HONOURS that was what I heard. The most significant 3 words I wanted to hear every since I joined CO. I didn't know what the atmosphere outsie was like, but inside the hall, I was shedding tears of joy. All these months of hard work really paid off.

I don't know how to express my thank to each and every one of you but this had just proven YQP to be the best section ever! I really really love you guys for making this journey so meaningful and worthwhile. If only SYF could repeat itself all over again...

SINGAPORE YOUTH FESTIVAL 2011
CENTRAL JUDGING OF CHINESE ORCHESTRAS
RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. PERFORMANCE
1.1 All participating Chinese Orchestras will perform the following in this order:
 the set piece
 one piece of their choice
1.2 All performances of the set piece are to adhere to the original score.
1.3 The choice piece should have a balanced instrumentation of the following:
wind, string, plucking and percussion sections. Solo instruments or sections
should not be predominant in the whole piece. Electric guitars, electric pianos,
synthesizers, organs and all other electronic devices are not allowed. Vocal
accompaniment or solos are also not allowed.
1.4 Five sets of conductor’s score for the choice piece are to be submitted at the
briefing cum balloting sessions to be held on 10 March 2011 (for Secondary
School Level) and 31 March 2011 (for JC/CI Level). The scores will be
returned at the end of the judging. To avoid infringement of copyright, only
original scores should be used during performance. For questions on
copyright, please contact the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore
(COMPASS) at 63236630.
1.5 Schools are not allowed to perform the same choice piece performed at the
Central Judging of Chinese Orchestras in 2009.
2. DURATION
2.1 The duration of the choice piece should not exceed 8 minutes.
2.2 10% of the final awarded mark will be deducted for any performance that
exceeds the stipulated time.
3. PARTICIPANTS
3.1 Each school is required to submit a list of no less than 24 and no more than
80 participants. All participants must be current students of the school. They
are required to be in full school uniform or their respective Chinese Orchestra
costumes. 10% of the final mark awarded will be deducted for Chinese
Orchestras that field less than 24 or more than 80 participants. All
participants, including percussionists, are required to remain on stage for the
duration of the performances.
3.2 Schools which field participants that are not current students of the school will
be disqualified and any award received will be revoked.
3.3 Each school will ballot for a performance number at the briefing cum balloting
session on 10 March 2011 (Secondary School Level) and 31 March 2011
(JC/CI Level) at MOE CCA Branch. Schools are required to adhere to the
reporting time corresponding with the performance number. Schools that do
SYF 2011 Central Judging - Chinese Orchestras 3 of 10
not adhere to the reporting time will have 5% of the final awarded mark
deducted.
3.4 Each student is allowed to participate in more than one event at the Central
Judging provided they do not perform the same role or play the same musical
instrument.
4. JUDGING CRITERIA
4.1 The judging criteria are as follows:
50% - Technique
Articulation
Dynamics
Intonation
Rhythm
Tone
50% - Musicianship
Balance
Blend
Expression
Interpretation
Phrasing
Style
4.2 The decision of the panel of adjudicators is final and no appeal will be
entertained.
5. AWARDS
5.1 The Central Judging provides the opportunity for Chinese orchestras to
benchmark their performance standards. There is no pre-determined number
of gold, silver or bronze awards. Participating Chinese orchestras will be
awarded certificates based on their performances as follows:
 Gold 80% and above
 Silver 70% to 79%
 Bronze 60% to 69%
 Certificate of Participation 59% and below
5.2 To recognise the outstanding achievement of Chinese orchestras that have
attained high performance standards, schools that obtain a final mark of 85%
and above will receive the Gold award (with Honours).
6. ENTRIES
6.1 Each secondary school, JC and CI is allowed to submit one entry for their
respective level.
6.2 IP schools may submit one entry each for the Secondary School and JC/CI
levels in the following manner:
Students’ Level in IP Schools Eligible Level
Years 1-4 (Equivalent Sec 1-4) Secondary School
Years 5-6 (Equivalent JC 1-2) Junior Colleges / Centralised Institute

Students in Years 1-4 are not eligible to participate in the JC/CI Level and
students in Years 5-6 are not eligible to participate in the Secondary School
Level.
6.3 Participating schools are required to submit their entry and other required
information via the SYF online portal at www.singaporeyouthfestival.sg.
Schools will be sent their access passwords via email through the school’s
official account in January 2011. All entries must be submitted by 11
February 2011 for the Secondary School Level and 4 March 2011 for the
JC/CI Level.
7. ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS
7.1 To ensure the smooth organisation of the Central Judging, all participating
schools are to comply with the rules and regulations.
7.2 The organisers reserve the right to impose a penalty for any infringement of
the rules and regulations.
7.3 Schools may contact Miss Tan Wei Xuan of Singapore Conference Hall at

hall for rehearsals.

HELLO PEAS!! >.-
AS you all know, cny performance is approaching in about a week's time. I understand that we only received our score like a month ago, but that doesn't mean it is gonna be the excuse for not being able to play to the standard. Even ET assured us that we'll be able to play it well by CNY provided that we're willing to put in the effort!
Here are just some things to note:

1)音色
So far i belive not everyone of us can perfect ourselves to 100% aiming of the gu bian right? So that is why there seem to be not much a difference between the gu bian and the centre. but you've got to keep in mind that we need to "hype" up the atmosphere of the piece esp the gu solo and our gu bian needs to be significantly SHARP. It may seem impossible for us to get it perfect by next week but at least put in the effort to? :D

2)Taifeng
you may think that taifeng makes you look ridiculous on stage but let me tell you, without taifeng, you will look more ridiculous and ugly. It gives the audience this super labourious feeling even though the sound may be good but they don't see you move. You guys will all look like scarecrows on stage! @_@ And another point to note is that taifeng is not to do it on purpose. It is this bounce effect that is exerted/ transferred onto your stick when you hit the gu and you draw the sound out xD gawd... told ya it was all about physics x.x and the stage is HUGE! compared to your teeny tiny movements, no one can see it, neither can they even notice your existence O: So i'll be working with you guys somewhere on wed lunch xD MEANWHILE PRAC IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR! and b the way, we're right smack in the middle so everyone can actually see us xD

3)we gotta play together!!
If we don't play together, it will just sound like a mess and you all know tht hall is really big and echoy so it will sound really disgusting and we will all loss that coolio and awesome effect there. The main focus of this piece is drums, so if we don't play it together and properly why don't just let one person play and loss all it's "woa" factor? So please, look out for one another when you play and don't just go on on your own and be absorbed in your own world. Percussion is meant to sound like one, played as one, heard as one so let's strive to make that happen :D Oh yes, do rmb to look at me when you play and don't stare too hard and you gu like as if a genie can pop out, or else we would never be together you see xP

Master class at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory 8/11/10

On 8 November 6 pm, Hongying, Joey, Yi Ying and I attended Bass Drum Bass-ics with Thomas Gauger at the Conservatory Orchestra Hall.

The master class began with a performance by the conservatory’s students. It was really impressive. And for those who attended, I am sure we learnt about the importance of 默契 and togetherness. Even for semiquavers, their strokes were totally uniform and synchronised, such that it sounded like one person playing.

After which, the Percussion Head talked about how he learned percussion and it was really insightful, as he mentioned how Mr Gauger, his teacher, taught him. He emphasised that focusing while playing is very important.

Soon after, Mr Gauger demonstrated. And one of the points I took note of was how he make marks on his score to indicate to himself that he needed to change instrument, as he was the only percussionist when he first began playing in an orchestra. At the start of the practice, get ready all your sticks and instruments and double check with the list at the top of your score which should state all the instruments used in that piece. Besides, by showing your strength while playing, one would then be able to play well.

For the bass drum, to get a low sound, tune it by tightening just like the pai gu. Ensure that the sound near every tuning knob is the same. For new bass drums, tighten them overnight and then loosen it to stretch the skin of the drum. Moreover, he also mentioned that bass drums with animal skin and fluffy mallets made from the sheep’s wool sounded nicer, thus creating a impactful deep sound. However, it is also possible to create a similar sound with a plastic head by playing closer to the centre.

For the playing of the bass drum, the general method is to bring the elbow in first followed by the wrist and then end with the mallet parallel to the drum. To play a staccato note, use your knee and hand to 灭音. The action has to be swift in order to create a sharp sound. The standing posture while playing the bass drum may appear to be hugging the drum but this allows for the percussionist to feel as a part of the drum.

To play continuous notes, try to dampen the previous sound from the previous note with your left hand. This is because after playing the previous note, the skin would be vibrating and going away from you. Besides, the ringing of the previous note would be carried over to the next note. Thus, when you hit the next note, the sound would not be so good and relatively softer (especially if it should be of equal volume or louder). As such, we can then achieve a consistent sound.

Mr Gauger also gave us further insights on more musical playing such as how to do phrasing. When doing phrasing, it should be towards the direction where the melody is going. Thus, apart from strictly following the beat and the value of each note, it would be good if one could use some rubato, eg. by allowing some notes to be longer or shorter. This would then allow the music to be move ahead.

Further more, it is also possible to play the bass drum with two mallets using one head ie. striking the two mallets simultaneously. This would allow for a louder sound as there is more surface area. He also highlighted the sound should have nuance.

All in all, this master class has helped us gain a deeper understanding.

Hi YQP!

When I visited some of you at guzheng rehearsal today it just dawned on me that I've graduated from NYCO for a pretty long time already! o:

Anyway, I hope you all are coping well with NYCO concert preparations! I know it's really pressurising to prepare rather difficult pieces in such a short time. So as the clock counts down to 17 July, what are you thinking about? Are you concerned about your academics? Or how tiring school life is? Or how you're going to get your insanely difficult parts right in 2 months' time?

Well if you're feeling worried or stressed (which I assume you are by now :P), just remember not to wear yourself out the wrong way. For my CO experience at least, I thought it was pretty important to have mental stamina simply because the journey was a long one. It's not like a sports CCA where you can relax after competitions. Learning music is a lot about consistency.

I know this is really old (especially from me), but this concert is not going to be just for the audience, just for Mrs Ee or just for NYCO. This concert is going to be about you. Think about how many people are going to support your performance, and how many people have their greatest faith and trust in you. You play a role that affects Mrs Ee, your sectionmates, your CO mates and your seniors who can't wait to watch the concert. Does that make you want to put up a show that will amaze everyone even more?

I hope you all will think about how to make these last 2 months matter. The road shouldn't and isn't going to be easy. You'll only feel proud of your efforts if you put in a LOT of time and dedication. It's never about who's clever or talented, but who pushes herself the furthest.

EVIL GNOME SPOT IN M401

SOME weeks ago, members of the Yang Ching Dah Chee Association were shocked to find an evil gnome sleeping in M401, a practice venue for young budding percussionists.

According to eyewitnesses, the gnome was sleeping behind the timpani, clad in what seemed to be a school uniform.

For privacy purposes, the school logos on the gnome's clothes have been censored.

Despite the gnome's strange appearance and the fact that it was weilding what seemed a weapon (nunchucks with cotton ends), the curious members of the Association were more excited than frightened of the alien being.

"It was just sleeping so serenely," said Ms Wei Shan Lim, "I couldn't help but take a few photos with it for keepsake."

The gnome was left undisturbed until it woke up, only to be stunned by the number of people surrounding it. In panic, it fled the scene and was never to be seen again.

Moral of the story? NEVER SLEEP IN DAZU. :)

KAY... this may seem a little out of point. But seriously, i think this makes sense! (credits to me (: cos i posted it on my blog-.-)

This is what I think:

I think SYF CO CJ is not like NAC- NCMC. We don't compete with anyone. We compete with ourselves. In the end, you don't get GWH not because another school got it, and there's only one GWH place, but because your standard is really not there yet. You are competing with yourself to do better and get what you want to get. What other schools get will not really affect what we will get.

That is why this is called a CENTRAL JUDGING. Not a COMPETITION. SYF is somewhat like a mark to tell ourselves where our standard roughly is. Try not to think of it as competition against other schools, but a performance at its best, only it is graded. It is in a way a stop for all the COs to stay on track (standard). If you had sth higher the last time round, it's a wake up call for you to buck up. To maintain the standard and not let it drop even more.

That is what SYF CO CJ is for.

maybe other people have said this or whatever, but i only thought of SYF in this way a few hours ago while CO blog surfing (: (and watching horror movie at the same time >< -BUT that's besides the point XD)

Let's have percussion lunch practice every day after the holidays! As Mrs Ee has said, our playing is not up to standard yet and we really need more practice together.

Also note percussion is having lunch practice with Mrs Ee on 26 March, Thursday. This is COMPULSORY! Remember remember remember.
