Hey my dear YQP,
I am supposed to be studying but I just can't get down to the mood to even open up my school bag! ><
Yesterday, 21/4/2011 was the day we played to our hearts content. Everything went on soo well on stage, everything passed so fast I couldn't believe it was ending!
Still remember backstage, all of us were panicking, and listening to all the other schools playing zheng and practising along with them. HCI was before us and RGS was after us. Everyone was staring at how much instruments we have and that HC guy was laughing at us but I just ignored him cause I know they are nothing compared to us.
Very soon it was our turn to go up on stage. My hands were sweating and I was very scared I would forget what to do. I felt like I havent seen the rest of CO for soo long. 2 years back, the same time, I was backstage listening to every other schools comments on our senior's performance and this year, I know other schools are going to do the same to us.
During zheng, I was soo touched by the music that I started crying. That bar 56 was so together!!! I tried to hold back my tears cause I know I will look really unglam O: haha zheng was soo good, everything sounded flowly and pieced together and so far I have never heard a zheng that was better than ours. yaotian's starting was so cool! I bet the audience are totally shocked :D My hand was shivering like MAD during my muyu part that I couldnt it the right place and i missed out a total of 2 beats O: But at bar 59 I was praying everything will be fine and i am sooo proud of you sophia! I could feel the starting of xiao kuai ban was too loud haha!! At the ending, I could feel the music flowing into me and I was really sad that everything's gonna be over just like that! O:
For the past 6months, we all have been working really hard. I believe sometimes I will just lose faith in everyone one of you including myself and give up practicing. But whatever it is, the pushwe gave ourselves the last few weeks had paid off. During the announcing of the results, we had to painfully wait for 52 schools. and when it reached no. 53 nanyang girls' high school, I held my breath, hoping that those 3 words would be heard. GOLD... WITH HONOURS that was what I heard. The most significant 3 words I wanted to hear every since I joined CO. I didn't know what the atmosphere outsie was like, but inside the hall, I was shedding tears of joy. All these months of hard work really paid off.
I don't know how to express my thank to each and every one of you but this had just proven YQP to be the best section ever! I really really love you guys for making this journey so meaningful and worthwhile. If only SYF could repeat itself all over again...

1. The SYF Central Judging of Chinese Orchestras will be held in April and May 2011,

2. All secondary schools, JCs, CI and IP schools are invited to participate in the Central
Judging. Please refer to the attached Annexes for details:

SINGAPORE YOUTH FESTIVAL 2011
CENTRAL JUDGING OF CHINESE ORCHESTRAS
RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. PERFORMANCE
1.1 All participating Chinese Orchestras will perform the following in this order:
the set piece
one piece of their choice
1.2 All performances of the set piece are to adhere to the original score.
1.3 The choice piece should have a balanced instrumentation of the following:
wind, string, plucking and percussion sections. Solo instruments or sections
should not be predominant in the whole piece. Electric guitars, electric pianos,
synthesizers, organs and all other electronic devices are not allowed. Vocal
accompaniment or solos are also not allowed.
1.4 Five sets of conductor’s score for the choice piece are to be submitted at the
briefing cum balloting sessions to be held on 10 March 2011 (for Secondary
School Level) and 31 March 2011 (for JC/CI Level). The scores will be
returned at the end of the judging. To avoid infringement of copyright, only
original scores should be used during performance. For questions on
copyright, please contact the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore
(COMPASS) at 63236630.
1.5 Schools are not allowed to perform the same choice piece performed at the
Central Judging of Chinese Orchestras in 2009.
2. DURATION
2.1 The duration of the choice piece should not exceed 8 minutes.
2.2 10% of the final awarded mark will be deducted for any performance that
exceeds the stipulated time.
3. PARTICIPANTS
3.1 Each school is required to submit a list of no less than 24 and no more than
80 participants. All participants must be current students of the school. They
are required to be in full school uniform or their respective Chinese Orchestra
costumes. 10% of the final mark awarded will be deducted for Chinese
Orchestras that field less than 24 or more than 80 participants. All
participants, including percussionists, are required to remain on stage for the
duration of the performances.
3.2 Schools which field participants that are not current students of the school will
be disqualified and any award received will be revoked.
3.3 Each school will ballot for a performance number at the briefing cum balloting
session on 10 March 2011 (Secondary School Level) and 31 March 2011
(JC/CI Level) at MOE CCA Branch. Schools are required to adhere to the
reporting time corresponding with the performance number. Schools that do

not adhere to the reporting time will have 5% of the final awarded mark
deducted.
3.4 Each student is allowed to participate in more than one event at the Central
Judging provided they do not perform the same role or play the same musical
instrument.
4. JUDGING CRITERIA
4.1 The judging criteria are as follows:
50% - Technique
Articulation
Dynamics
Intonation
Rhythm
Tone
50% - Musicianship
Balance
Blend
Expression
Interpretation
Phrasing
Style
4.2 The decision of the panel of adjudicators is final and no appeal will be
entertained.
5. AWARDS
5.1 The Central Judging provides the opportunity for Chinese orchestras to
benchmark their performance standards. There is no pre-determined number
of gold, silver or bronze awards. Participating Chinese orchestras will be
awarded certificates based on their performances as follows:
Gold 80% and above
Silver 70% to 79%
Bronze 60% to 69%
Certificate of Participation 59% and below
5.2 To recognise the outstanding achievement of Chinese orchestras that have
attained high performance standards, schools that obtain a final mark of 85%
and above will receive the Gold award (with Honours).
6. ENTRIES
6.1 Each secondary school, JC and CI is allowed to submit one entry for their
respective level.
6.2 IP schools may submit one entry each for the Secondary School and JC/CI
levels in the following manner:
Students’ Level in IP Schools Eligible Level
Years 1-4 (Equivalent Sec 1-4) Secondary School
Years 5-6 (Equivalent JC 1-2) Junior Colleges / Centralised Institute

Students in Years 1-4 are not eligible to participate in the JC/CI Level and
students in Years 5-6 are not eligible to participate in the Secondary School
Level.
6.3 Participating schools are required to submit their entry and other required
information via the SYF online portal at www.singaporeyouthfestival.sg.
Schools will be sent their access passwords via email through the school’s
official account in January 2011. All entries must be submitted by 11
February 2011 for the Secondary School Level and 4 March 2011 for the
JC/CI Level.
7. ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS
7.1 To ensure the smooth organisation of the Central Judging, all participating
schools are to comply with the rules and regulations.
7.2 The organisers reserve the right to impose a penalty for any infringement of
the rules and regulations.
7.3 Schools may contact Miss Tan Wei Xuan of Singapore Conference Hall at
Tel: 65574030 or email at wxtan@sco.com.sg for enquiries on booking the
hall for rehearsals.

HELLO PEAS!! >.-
AS you all know, cny performance is approaching in about a week's time. I understand that we only received our score like a month ago, but that doesn't mean it is gonna be the excuse for not being able to play to the standard. Even ET assured us that we'll be able to play it well by CNY provided that we're willing to put in the effort!
Here are just some things to note:
1)音色
So far i belive not everyone of us can perfect ourselves to 100% aiming of the gu bian right? So that is why there seem to be not much a difference between the gu bian and the centre. but you've got to keep in mind that we need to "hype" up the atmosphere of the piece esp the gu solo and our gu bian needs to be significantly SHARP. It may seem impossible for us to get it perfect by next week but at least put in the effort to? :D
2)Taifeng
you may think that taifeng makes you look ridiculous on stage but let me tell you, without taifeng, you will look more ridiculous and ugly. It gives the audience this super labourious feeling even though the sound may be good but they don't see you move. You guys will all look like scarecrows on stage! @_@ And another point to note is that taifeng is not to do it on purpose. It is this bounce effect that is exerted/ transferred onto your stick when you hit the gu and you draw the sound out xD gawd... told ya it was all about physics x.x and the stage is HUGE! compared to your teeny tiny movements, no one can see it, neither can they even notice your existence O: So i'll be working with you guys somewhere on wed lunch xD MEANWHILE PRAC IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR! and b the way, we're right smack in the middle so everyone can actually see us xD
3)we gotta play together!!
If we don't play together, it will just sound like a mess and you all know tht hall is really big and echoy so it will sound really disgusting and we will all loss that coolio and awesome effect there. The main focus of this piece is drums, so if we don't play it together and properly why don't just let one person play and loss all it's "woa" factor? So please, look out for one another when you play and don't just go on on your own and be absorbed in your own world. Percussion is meant to sound like one, played as one, heard as one so let's strive to make that happen :D Oh yes, do rmb to look at me when you play and don't stare too hard and you gu like as if a genie can pop out, or else we would never be together you see xP
